Create Auto Page number in the Table of Content (TOC)

Create Auto Page number in the Table of Content (TOC)

The Auto Page Numbering feature enhances the efficiency of managing page numbers in the Table of Contents (TOC) by automatically updating them as the document changes. This ensures that the TOC remains accurate and reflective of the current pagination without requiring manual adjustments.

Creating Auto Page Number References

To set up auto page numbering references in your document:
      1. Highlight the content where you wish to establish a page number reference. This could be a specific section or heading that needs to be linked to a page number.
      2. Click on the Auto Page Number icon available in the toolbar.

      3. From the dropdown menu, select Create TOC Reference. This action will set up a reference point for the page number in the selected content.
      4. Click OK to finalize and insert the page number reference. You can now use this reference for linking it to any line in the Table of Contents.

Linking Auto Page Number References

After establishing the references, you need to link them to the actual page numbers in the Table of Contents:
      1. Choose the page number within the Table of Contents that you want to link to the reference.
      2. Click on the Auto Page Number icon in the Insert tab.

      3. Choose TOC Reference from the dropdown menu.
      4. From the list of references, select the one that corresponds to the page number you are linking.

      5. Click OK to create the link. This ensures that any changes in the page numbers throughout the document will be automatically updated in the Table of Contents. With the link established, any updates to page numbers will be reflected in the Table of Contents, eliminating the need for manual corrections.

      6. To disconnect a page number from its reference, select the page number and choose Remove TOC from the Insert tab, or right-click the page number and select Remove TOC Tag.

TOC Report

The TOC report provides a comprehensive overview of which page numbers and TOC references are linked, offering a detailed summary in an Excel format. This report helps in verifying the accuracy of links between references and page numbers. Follow the provided steps below.

      1. Navigate to the Insert tab and click on the TOC Report icon.
      2. An Excel file will be downloaded. Open this file to review the detailed information regarding the TOC references and their corresponding page numbers.

This structured approach ensures that your Table of Contents remains accurate and up-to-date with minimal manual intervention.
